Gloyer-Taylor Laboratories LLC was formed in early 2004 from a merger of PacAstro and Aspect Engineering, and has offices in Tullahoma, TN and Murrieta, CA. Since this merger, the company has established several new Laboratories to develop new products and capabilities. See Our Laboratories page for more information on these new Laboratories. PacAstro — PacAstro was founded in 1989 to develop the PA-2 small launch vehicle to provide low cost access to space. The PA-2 vehicle was designed to deliver a 500 to 1000 lbm payload to low earth orbit for less than $6M. To achieve this goal, PacAstro developed and demonstrated a suite of new technologies in the mid-nineties. Some of these new technologies include composite propellant tanks, specifically an composite liquid oxygen tank, composite fuel tanks, and a high performance large composite helium tank, and an advanced high performance, low-cost rocket engine. These technologies were successfully demonstrated in the PA-X suborbital rocket program and the PA-E rocket engine program. PacAstro was spun off from its parent company, AeroAstro Inc., in 2003 in preparation for the 2004 merger with Aspect Engineering. In 2005, the PacAstro Lab office in Waveland, MS was destroyed in hurricane Katrina. As a result, PacAstro Lab opened its current office in Tullahoma, TN, next to the campus of the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) and is working with UTSI on a variety of joint research projects. Aspect Engineering — Aspect Engineering was founded in 1990 to develop and apply advanced composite structures technologies. In the late 90’s, Aspect Engineering began working with Orbital Sciences Corporation on the development of the Upper Stage Flight Experiment (USFE) program for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Early in the program, Aspect Engineering designed and fabricated the first composite propellant tank for Class 1 storage of high-test hydrogen peroxide. Based on these results, Aspect Engineering designed and analyzed the full scale Common Bulkhead Tank and Integral structure for USFE, and provided on-site supervision of the fabrication of the full scale hardware. The Aspect Engineering Lab division of Gloyer-Taylor Laboratories LLC is based in Murrieta, California Gloyer-Taylor Laboratories Facilities The Tennessee office is equipped with several computer workstations with many design tools, including design and analysis worksheets, SolidWorks 3D solid modeling and CEQUEL combustion chemistry code. This office also has several propulsion test systems, including a hybrid rocket test system, a vortex hybrid rocket test system, and a propellant chemistry test system. The California office has computer workstations with both 2-D CAD and 3-D parametric solid modeling software. This office also uses spreadsheets and proprietary software in the design and evaluation of composite pressure vessels and tankage. NASA-generated software LEW-10352 is used in the generation of dome contours for filament wound pressure vessels. The California office has in-house filament winding capability with a CMC model ULD computer-controlled filament winding machine capable of producing parts up to 24 inches in diameter, Fibergraphix software for pattern generation, a programmable oven for laminate curing, and 0ºF freezer for storage of prepreg materials and pre-mixed adhesives. |
